About
Weary from covering Italian politics, terrorism, and the drug traffic for many years, I decided to devote my writing entirely to fostering conservation of the myriad beautiful, inspiring things which Italy has given the world.
The reason is simple: without an appreciation of the Italian heritage, the risk is of ever less conservation. Hence my first book, which required five years of work, related the impact upon world culture of the discoveries at Pompeii.
For example,  mid-18th century France interpreted the discovery of Pompeii’s neighbor, Herculaneum, as a demonstration of how ancient Greek culture fostered democracy. This vision contributed to the French Revolution.
Today the Italian city most in peril is Venice, about which I also wrote a book.
