Countess Evelina Talk: 12 Oct 2017: Keats-Shelly House

Judith Harris will present an illustrated talk on her biography of the Countess Evelina van Milligen Pisani at the Keats-Shelley House, a few steps from Piazza di Spagna in Rome, on 12 October at 5 pm. Today a museum, this is the House where the poet died at only age 26. Living in the cosmopolitan Venice of the late 19th century, Evelina was “a great personage and on the whole the biggest swell in the place,” wrote her admiring friend Henry James. The novelist praised her beauty, and once described Evelina as his “ideal heroine…. a truly extraordinary woman.” Evelina died in the year 1900. The huge formal garden she created in the misty Po Valley remains her heritage, and is open to the public. Tickets $5, Advance booking recommended but not essential
